Understanding DeWitt County Releases
DeWitt County released inmates leave one custody record, but they do not all leave custody in the same legal way. The DeWitt County Jail may return a person to the community after bond, time served, dismissal, sentence completion, probation, or another court order. It may also transfer that person to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody. A transfer ends the local booking without establishing freedom. The release code and destination matter as much as the date.
Clarence N. Stevenson Unit creates a separate state-prison trail. Parole and mandatory supervision permit physical release while the sentence continues under supervision. Discharge usually means the sentence has ended. A favorable parole vote, projected date, or removal from a current list is not the same as completed release. DeWitt County release research works best when the booking, court authority, physical departure, destination, and any supervision are checked as separate facts.
- Bond
- Release from pretrial custody while the criminal case and bond duties continue.
- Time served
- Credit or completion satisfies the custody part ordered in that case.
- Parole
- Conditional prison release before sentence discharge.
- Mandatory supervision
- Release from prison under statutory and Board rules for the unserved term.
- Discharge
- Completion or termination of the sentence, distinct from supervised release.
Routes Out of DeWitt Custody
The DeWitt County release record should be read for both the route and the next custodian. Dismissal may remove the basis for one case but leave another hold. A bond can free a person from the jail while the case remains active. Transfer often explains why a booking card vanished even though the person stayed in government custody.
| Recorded event | Meaning | Next source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or personal bond | Physical release subject to the case and bond terms | Jail release record and court case |
| Time served or sentence completion | County custody credited or completed | Release screen and judgment |
| Probation order | Community sentence or supervision may follow | Court and local CSCD |
| TDCJ transfer | County confinement ends, state custody begins | TDCJ current search |
| USMS or ICE transfer | Custody continues with a federal agency | Federal docket, USMS, or ICE locator |
| Parole or mandatory supervision | Prison release with sentence supervision | TDCJ and Victoria DPO |
| Discharge | State sentence reaches completion | TDCJ historical record |
DeWitt County Release Record Fields
A useful DeWitt County release record connects the departure to one precise booking. Citizen Connect can supply identifiers from a current card, but it does not publish a historical release screen. Ask for the release portion of the jail-management record and the booking sheet. Narrow language helps the custodian locate the right event and separates public fields from any protected material.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Full name and date of birth | Identity, subject to careful matching |
| Booking number | The exact DeWitt County Jail event |
| Arrest and booking dates | When the custody episode began |
| Arresting agency | The agency that initiated the booking |
| Cause or docket number | The related court file |
| Charges and bond | Booking allegations and bond data, not final disposition |
| Release date and time | When jail processing ended |
| Release type or code | Bond, order, time served, transfer, or other route |
| Authorizing order | The legal basis recorded for departure |
| Receiving agency | Whether custody continued after transfer |
A booking photograph identifies the booking but does not prove later release. Likewise, a judgment may explain the legal authority without showing the exact time jail staff completed the exit. Pair the jail record with the court record when timing and legal outcome both matter.
Names alone are weak identifiers. DeWitt County records can contain similar names, spelling changes, and more than one custody episode for the same person. Match the date of birth, booking number, cause number, arrest date, and facility before joining two documents. If one field conflicts, ask the custodian to clarify which booking the release entry belongs to.
Request DeWitt County Release Records
The DeWitt County Sheriff's Office is the custodian to approach for county-jail booking and release material. Its printable request route identifies kim.jalufka@dwcotx.org. No fixed local copy fee or response duration was verified, so a request should not promise either. Texas agencies may ask for clarification when wording is broad, and a cost estimate can require acceptance before work proceeds.
- Record the full name, date of birth, booking number, and approximate booking dates from a reliable source.
- Ask for the booking sheet and the release portion of the jail-management record for that booking.
- Name the desired fields, including release date and time, release code, authorizing order, and receiving agency.
- Request the booking photograph as a separate item if needed.
- Ask for established public portions with lawful redactions if confidential review would delay the full response.

Online visibility is not a retention schedule. A card can disappear from Citizen Connect while the underlying agency record remains subject to retention rules, a litigation hold, or case-specific limits. Ask the custodian about the record rather than assuming the web display marks destruction.
Law on DeWitt Release Records
Texas Government Code Chapter 552 supplies the general right to public information. Section 552.108 contains law-enforcement exceptions, while subsection (c) preserves basic information about an arrested person, arrest, and crime from that particular exception. That does not make every jail file public in full. Juvenile confidentiality, active-case concerns, privacy, protected identifiers, expunction, and nondisclosure may alter access.
A missing or withheld record is an access result. It is not proof that no booking or release occurred.
Texas expunction under Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A and nondisclosure rules can change what remains public. DeWitt's District Clerk also posts a local expunction agency list. Its notice process states that, effective September 1, 2025, service can cost $25 per agency when no email is available, with no such charge for emailed notice. That amount concerns expunction notice, not an ordinary jail-record copy fee.
Property After DeWitt Jail Release
The sheriff's detention FAQ contains an unusual conflict about property left after departure. It says property will be stored for 14 calendar days, yet the same sentence says it is destroyed “on the fourth day.” Those statements cannot be reconciled safely. Call the jail at 361-275-0034 at once instead of relying on either deadline.
For property released while a person remains in custody, the FAQ says the person must consent, the recipient must show identification, and pickup occurs during normal visitation hours. This property process is separate from custody verification. A successful pickup does not substitute for a release screen, transfer entry, or court order.
Find Released DeWitt County Inmates
The search begins with the right system. The official Citizen Connect portal answers whether a person is now shown as confined and provides booking identifiers. It does not publish an enabled releases view. The sheriff's older short hostname returned an error on the August 2, 2026 research date while the vendor endpoint worked, so use the direct portal and retain the jail phone as a fallback.
- Search Current Confinements and capture the booking number, booked time, arresting agency, charges, bond details, and case number.
- If no current card appears, do not label the person released. Ask the jail whether the person remains in custody and request the release or transfer fields.
- Search the County Clerk index for county-level matters and contact the District Clerk for felony records and judgments.
- If the record shows a state transfer, use TDCJ. If it shows a federal path, use the federal docket and the responsible agency.
- Confirm the physical event with a release record even when a notification, court order, or projected date points toward release.
A released person normally drops from the live roster. Absence can also mean transfer, a spelling mismatch, delayed data, or a different custodian.
The dedicated DeWitt County 24-Hour Releases page explains the same-day fallback when no official release feed exists. It should never be confused with the portal's last-24-hour admits button.
DeWitt Release Records by Court
DeWitt County court research is split by level. The County Clerk's online index covers county criminal, civil, and probate records and suggests trying name formats such as “Doe, John” and “Doe John.” Felony judgments belong with the District Clerk. The sheriff does not maintain court dockets and directs court-date questions to the proper clerk.
The District Clerk reported that a site reconstruction beginning July 21, 2026 interrupted new docket posting. Phone or email confirmation therefore matters more than a silent page. Court disposition can show dismissal, sentence, credit, deferred adjudication, acquittal, or revocation. It still may not state the minute when jail release processing finished.
TDCJ Search for DeWitt Releases
The TDCJ online inmate search expressly covers people currently incarcerated in a TDCJ facility. It can show a projected release date and parole-review data for a current prisoner, but it is not a public database of discharged people. Once a person leaves state custody, a historical admission, release, parole, mandatory-supervision, or discharge record belongs in the TDCJ Public Information Act channel.
| Search item | Use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Last and first name | Find a current matching record | Confirm identity with more fields |
| TDCJ number | Targets the state commitment | Different from a county booking number |
| SID number | State identifier when known | Not always available to the searcher |
| Projected Release Date | Calculated future marker | Not proof of physical release |
| Parole Review Information | Shows review status for a current prisoner | A vote is not an exit time |
The TDCJ email information route can supply a TDCJ number, location, current and prior incarceration offense information, county and court data, and a projected date. It does not provide photographs. Written historical requests go through the TDCJ PIA process.
The official search form visibly states its current-incarceration scope.
That limit is why a historical request, not a blank current result, is the sound route for a completed state release.
Two DeWitt Release Systems
DeWitt County contains a 160-bed county jail and the 1,384-capacity Clarence N. Stevenson Unit. This local contrast makes a county-name inmate query ambiguous. The jail handles local bookings and transfers. Stevenson is a TDCJ state prison with its own offender, parole, and discharge channels.
A person who disappears from the county roster may have entered TDCJ, including a unit outside DeWitt County. A person released from Stevenson may return to an approved county elsewhere and be assigned to a different supervision office. Facility location, county of conviction, release destination, and supervision assignment are separate facts.
DeWitt County Recent Release Limits
No official DeWitt County 24-hour or 72-hour release feed was verified. Citizen Connect offers Current Confinements, a last-24-hour admits control, a last-seven-day admits control, and a custom admit range of up to 31 days. Every one of those dated controls concerns admission into custody. None should be relabeled as a release list. Current cards may show a photograph, booking number, arrest and booking times, agency, charges, docket and bond details, but they do not show a release date, reason, or destination.
For a recent departure, capture the identifiers before the card disappears when possible. Then ask the jail for narrow custody information and submit a request for the release or transfer fields. Check the court index for the related order. Continue with TDCJ when a state transfer appears, or the proper federal channel when the record names a federal hold. A live roster can answer who remains, while the written release record explains who left and how.
Does a missing card prove release? No. It supports only the conclusion that the person is not shown in the current DeWitt County view at that moment. Transfer, data delay, name variation, and another custodian remain possible.
Supervision After DeWitt County Release
Parole, mandatory supervision, and probation describe different legal paths. Parole and mandatory supervision follow release from TDCJ confinement while part of the sentence remains active. Probation is imposed by a court and may occur without a state-prison release. DeWitt County is assigned to the Victoria District Parole Office for TDCJ field supervision, while local probation is handled through the 24th Judicial District Community Supervision and Corrections Department.
Verify supervision with the agency responsible for the specific order. A Board vote code or projected date may show progress toward release, but neither proves departure or field-office assignment. After physical release, pair TDCJ information with operational confirmation from the assigned office. The DeWitt County Post-Release Supervision page distinguishes the offices, Board codes, violations, absconder concerns, and discharge.
Supervision also changes the meaning of “free.” A person on parole or mandatory supervision is out of prison but has not necessarily discharged the sentence. A person on probation follows a court order rather than a prison-release decision. Records should preserve those distinctions.
DeWitt Release Alerts and Federal Records
Texas moved county notification service from VINE/VINELink to IVSS-Counties on September 1, 2025. Existing registrations migrated. The portal warns that people no longer in custody may not appear, and the service is not an official record. Preserve any alert, distinguish release from transfer, and confirm the event with the DeWitt jail or court. State-prison victim notification is a separate TDCJ channel.
Federal custody needs federal sources. The BOP Inmate Locator can return release information for federal prisoners within its coverage, but absence alone does not explain USMS pretrial custody. The ICE Online Detainee Locator has its own identifier rules and a limited released-person window documented by ICE. USMS and ICE transfers from the DeWitt jail are continuous custody, not county community releases.
Where DeWitt Release Status Appears
Each system answers a narrow question. Combining them prevents a current-custody screen from being mistaken for a historical release source.
| Source | Best question | What absence means |
|---|---|---|
| Citizen Connect | Is the person currently shown in DeWitt County Jail? | Indeterminate; verify release or transfer |
| Jail release record | When and how did this booking end? | Ask custodian about scope, identifiers, or access limits |
| County or District Clerk | What order or disposition affected the case? | Check the correct court level and posting status |
| TDCJ current search | Is the person now incarcerated by TDCJ? | Not proof of discharge |
| TDCJ historical request | What state admission, release, or discharge occurred? | Refine the written request |
| BOP or ICE | What does the federal agency report? | Coverage and custody stage must be checked |
DeWitt County Release Facilities
DeWitt County Jail is operated by the Sheriff's Office. Community release must be confirmed through its release record or related court order, while a receiving-agency field identifies transfers. Clarence N. Stevenson Unit is operated by TDCJ. Its parole, mandatory-supervision, and discharge records follow state-prison channels, not Citizen Connect.
